Forty consecutive addresses cost less than ten spread across ranges. The behaviour explains the price.
The receiving side looks at the range an address belongs to, and weighs that as heavily as the address itself. Addresses in one range are treated as related.
The practical result: forty in a row act as a single hand. One of them hits a limit and the other thirty-nine come under suspicion.
The first half hour is clean. Then refusals arrive in a batch and half the pool leaves at almost the same moment.
The signature is unmistakable: the addresses that drop are neighbours. Random attrition never looks like that.
Ask for the range spread directly: how many distinct subnets are in the set. An evasive answer usually means one.
A working figure: no more than eight addresses per subnet. Sixty addresses therefore means at least eight distinct ranges.
Group the list by the first three numbers of each address. One group means one range, however long the list is.
While you are at it, spread the load evenly: a collector taking addresses in order from a sorted list will spend the first part of the run inside one subnet.
